Canas Was Killed by Continuity Errors
Edit: Thank you guys for the feature. Hope you guys enjoy it!
In the first part of this series, we talked about Blazing Blade and it's story, with multiple story paths; the faithful Hector Mode, the new Lyn Mode, and the alternate take on the main story through the central Lord in Eliwood Mode. Now, we focus on the game that Blazing Blade tied into; Binding Blade.
1. Roy
Okay, let's get the elephant out of the room; Roy is... Somewhat bland. Heroes helps a little, but even then, you need to assume a lot for his personality. Granted, every character has some assumption involved somewhat, but Roy involves too much assumption for his character to really florish. Much of his screen time is really there for expository purposes. More screen time should be devoted to Roy being a person, not an expository device. Which brings us to...
2. The Company
If we're being honest here, there is only about 16 out of FE6's large cast of characters in Binding Blade with actual characters, and Bartre, Marcus, Zephiel, and Karel had another game for them, so brings down to about 12. Granted, you wouldn't know that since they tend to be not that good character wise (Lilina, Sophia, Fir, Hugh... You get the idea). The Archenea and Valentia crew used to be blank faces too. However, Alm's crew went from blank faces to this:
Hell, achieving this objective through Memory Prisms isn't a bad thing. Just give these people some actual personality. Or, you know, making the ones with an actual personality good.
3. The Story
The story has often been criticized for being a lot like Mystery of the Emblem and it's story. Homeland invaded? Check. Goes to someplace to put down help restore order, only for them to be on the wrong side? Beginning of FE3 and Western Isles. Check. Antagonist who has relationshipbproblems? Oh, double check on that (Zephiel's daddy issues and Hardin's love issues). Yep, totally not Mystery.
So what I propose is keep the general story the same, but after you beat the game the first time, you unlock the Data Transfer option. Yes, everyone: I'm pulling a Radiant Dawn and putting in Data Transfer. With the Remake of the prequel.
Wait, would that make the FE7 Remake the first game and FE6 the sequel? Release them in close proximity? Eh, worry about it later. Anyway, new paths will be unlocked based on what you completed in FE7R.
4. Hector Mode Unlocks
If you have a completed Hector Mode file, then you will unlock a mode where you Hector fanboys will love. Instead of Roy being the main Lord...
Lilina will be your main Lord, with the chapters without her in the original game being her getting back to Ostia and a defense map in Ostia, while making her original recruitment chapter a bigger pain in the ass, as Roy and his group show up on one side, the Knight group (plus Oujay/Ogier) on another, and the Illian Mercenaries on another part, who by the way would be your group for said chapters (since Hector hired them and all).
The reason is simple; Lilina is pretty freaking popular, in case you guys couldn't tell. Plus, seeing Lilina's side of things would be welcome (since it would be like Hector Mode; Eliwood is still the central character, but focuses on Hector). Promotion wouldn't be too hard either; since Roy promotes when he gets the Binding Blade, have her promote when you get For blaze, since Cipher likes associating the tome with her in her artwork. It would obviously be a forced chapter, but to compensate for that, if Sophia lives Chapter 14, you get ANOTHER Guiding Ring. No complaints there right?
Plus, there would be some flashback scenes involving her time with her mother, each unique for each possible choice to compensate for the fact that Hector's paired endings were all basically the same thing. Plus, her mother determines the path after retaking Etruia; if it was Florina or Farina, then Illia route. If it was Lyn, then the Sacae Route, complete with a talk with Lyn's ghost, since, you know, her mother dies between FE7 and FE6 either way.
5. Lyn Mode Unlocks
If you have a completed Lyn Mode save, then there would be an extended Sacae Route (Jeesh, I wonder why). Also, Lyn would be mentioned quite frequently through the story, even more so in Sacae, as she's pledged as a hero of sorts for being a noble and Caelin crisis with her saving her grandfather. If Lyn was the mother of Lilina, then Lilina would frequently remisence about her through out the game, with Sacaen leaders supporting Roy's group just because of Lilina's heritage. If Lyn was Roy's mother (a big 'if' though because... Ninian exists), then the same thing above will be applied for Roy. Also, Roy will go to Sacae more so for recovering Sacae's honor, since his mother would be Sacean. Plus, ghost Lyn scene, because there is NEVER enough ghosts in Fire Emblem. And Star Wars.
If Lyn was paired with Rath, then Sue would become a central character in the Sacae Route, with details of Rath and Lyn's lives there being detailed. If Kent or Rath were paired with Lyn though, you get Lyn as a unit, because she doesn't die with those two! And before you say she would too old, tell Marcus that. I dare you. Also, if this happens, a different epilouge erupts; Eliwood at Lyn's grave, Lilina having a statue for her parents, Lyn with Sue at Roy's coronation, or Lyn just hanging out with Eliwood.
6. Eliwood Mode Unlocks
If you completed Eliwood Mode, then you unlock an extended Ilia route. I've should've mentioned this earlier, but Eliwood's paired endings in FE7R would be just Ninian or no Ninian, because, you know, more emphasis on the two in that mode. Anyway, Roy goes to Ilia for more answers regarding his mother, only to find another soul there that did not die of continuity errors...
Yes, Canas was preserved in the ice, due to dark magic. Before you say that's insane, talk to Captain America. Plus, does anybody know exactly what Dark Magic, or any magic for that matter, does outside of combat? Anyway, Canas helps Roy, and unlike his mother (who he replaces) offers a more sympathetic view on dragons and, you know, the truth. The game would feature various of flashbacks to Roy's childhood with Eliwood and Ninian, and throughout the game, Roy constantly prays that his mother is watching over him. Before he faces Idunn, she knocks Roy out in a similar vein to Corrin in Fates, expect this time, Ninian comes and brings him back to the land of the living, giving people a tearful moment. The game would then end with Eliwood at Ninian's grave, talking to her as she was still alive, and leaves her favorite flowers on her grave.
7. The Blazing Blade Cast
Speaking of Canas though, where the hell is everyone else? They can make cameos, right? As a matter of fact, there should probably be more connections to Blazing Blade for that matter.
8. Soundtrack
In my opinion, in the Hector Mode unlock, there should be different map themes and a different attack theme, due to being, you know, Lilina focused. Before you say it hasn't done in a FE game, compare the map themes of the beginning of Eliwood and Hector Mode. Trust me; they aren't the same. And don't make me get Street Fighter music to prove you wrong.
Well, that's all folks. Next time, we will discuss gameplay, because if we're being honest here... It's really the same thing. Now to ahead, praise, criticize, argue, whatever you do in the comments section.
